Guest Presenters

JoanIsbellMysoreAppJoan Isbell was introduced to the Ashtanga practice in 1993 and was impacted immediately.   The physical challenge coupled with the precise meditative techniques make for strong therapy, ever deepening the yoga experience.   She feels extremely fortunate to call such luminaries as Richard Freeman, Tim Miller, and Annie Pace her teachers here in the west, and because of them she was inspired to travel to India and meet Pattabhi Jois.  She made her first trip to Pattabhi Jois’s yoga shala in Mysore in 1998 and has made 3 subsequent trips, receiving authorization to teach from Sharath in 2010.    She is one of a handful of teachers in Colorado who have the official credential to teach this practice.

Kate Ross
Yoga for the People

RossKate’s experience as the founder and Co-Executive Director of the non-profit Yoga for the People allows her to cross coordinate programs between the Denver non-profit community and yoga teachers throughout the city. Yoga for the People brings yoga, nutritional programs, and meditation to people who would not otherwise have access to the ancient wellness practice of yoga.

In addition, Kate brings her experience as a Clinical Assistant Professor on the field education team, at the Graduate School of Social Work at DU. She coordinates field sites, meeting individually with students, and serving on various committees. She has been an adjunct professor in the Community Track since 2003 and became an appointed faculty member in 2006.

As the Faculty Director of the Wellness Living and Learning Community at DU, Kate works collaboratively with the Program Coordinator to ensure that students in the WWLC experience a comprehensive wellness curriculum that includes courses in wellness, experiential activities, and opportunities to participate in the community at large from a wellness perspective. In addition, programming within the learning community allows students to experience a greater depth of connection to wellness and to each other.

Her past experience includes wilderness programming, high risk youth and families, job-training and preventative program development. Also important is her role as a mother to her daughter and her role as the yoga and pottery teacher at her daughter’s school. Her passion is “community mind-body social work” including yoga and integration of spirit into daily practice.
